What it comes down to is that one should avoid becoming shallow and materialistic, seeking pleasure as an end in itself, rather than as a means to the end of completing your life, and leading the best existence you can in the limited time that you have. Within limits, I believe that indulging yourself and seeking pleasure is a good thing. However, at the same time excessive abstinence can lead to an impoverished existence devoid of pleasure or fun. Abstaining from materialism and excessive pleasure in favor of something deeper and of substance will provide greater fulfillment and self-improvement. A life based on instant gratification and materialism will never provide true happiness, or more importantly progress and fulfillment.
